The first Wordfall prototype - expectations
Hello and thank you for checking this out!
This is a prototype of a little idea that’s been sitting in my head for a while. It’s just me goofing off in Unreal for a few hours to see if this idea has any merit. I’d love if you tried this out and would like to give me any feedback on the basic idea.
Some important info:
This is super duper basic -- it only has the bare minimum of visual feedback and virtually no aesthetic treatment because I'm testing the core idea. This only works on Windows right now while I figure out if it's worth continuing.
Known issues:
- nothing is optimized: the letter weighting, scoring, block fall timing, column selection on block falling, powerup fills, and the word list has some weird missing words.
- You will likely get a few games -- probably too many -- where you end up with a column of letters piling up and you just can't make a word out of them. This is the thing that makes me wonder if the core game idea won't be very fun in the long run, so I'm interested in that. I can likely work on algorithms, weightings, etc. to mitigate that, but I wonder if the randomness of falling blocks Tetris-style is completely orthogonal to the fun people tend to get out of word-making games and if the two ideas are incompatible. I did find myself repeatedly enjoying restarting the game on failure and trying again. But that's probably because I made it.
Things that I'll do if it feels any good:
- lots of visual polish, for-real art, more vfx, etc.
- different levels -- maybe speed/number of blocks that fall, etc.
- different 3D backgrounds for different levels maybe
- maybe different kinds of powerups
